With so much talk about Twitter, Facebook, and social media in general, your company may be feeling the pressure to get involved. At the same time you may be questioning the payback, time commitment, and if you were to start, suggestions on the best way to get involved.
All good points, and I’ll speak to each of them over the next little while on this blog.
Perhaps the best way to start is by becoming familiar with the social media landscape yourself. You can do this in a number of ways.
Learning about social media through podcasts:
I did it by purchasing an iPod and then, through Apple’s iTunes website, subscribing to a number of business/PR podcasts. You don’t have to have an iPod, as many people listen to the podcasts directly from their computer, but I enjoy listening to them while I am at the gym, commuting to work, and working in the garden. I find it very convenient.
Here are some of my favourites – and you can listen to them directly from your computer by clicking on the links below:
For Immediate Release – Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson have been hosting this twice weekly one hour podcast for over four years – they offer great incites into PR and technology – a great place to start. This is a photo of Shel and Neville doing their podcast live, taken by Jeremiah Owyang.
Six Pixels of Separation – Mitch Joel posts a weekly one hour podcast that tends to focus on digital marketing and personal branding. Well worth listening to.
Managing the Gray – C.C. Chapman offers high energy interesting discussions on various aspects of social media.

Inside PR – weekly half hour podcast offering incites into the world of public relations, from an agency perspective. Always humorous.
Dave Jones and Terry Fallis, co-founders of Inside PR, at the 2006 Mesh Conference.
Trafcom News – Donna Papacosta is originally from New York but now lives and works in Toronto. She offers very helpful tips for communicating with employees, customers and prospects. She also offers webinars on topics such as podcasting.
Start with these, and you’ll quickly discover others you’d like to listen to as well. You’ll also be current on the latest trends, issues and controversies.
